This course will include an assessment of the controversial and fragmentary sources on the lives of women in Greece and Rome from pre-history to the Roman Empire with occasional comparisons to other contemporary Mediterranean cultures. The course will include evidence from material culture, poetic texts (esp. epic, drama, and lyric poetry), cosmologies, historical documents and inscriptions, philosophical and medical sources, and oratory. We will also read twentieth-century sociological and anthropological texts that may help to analyze the readings
